The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 11 - 14, 1973

Saturday, August 11, 1973

I did a lot today. Washed, cleaned up the house, defrosted both refrigerators. Made bread and rolls. In late p.m. Zak came up for the night. Betty, Walt and kids out on an overnight camping trip.

Sunday, August 12, 1973

A very nice day. Done regular work. Betty and Walt went to Lisbon. Billie went with Lawrence. The Horton’s came home from their camping trip. After supper Bill, Christie and I went for a long ride. Betty and Zak here in evening.

Monday, August 13, 1973 very nice day, new frames for glasses

It has been a very nice day. Nice drying day. I washed and went down to Betty’s a little while. I got new frames for my glasses. Betty and I picked the kids clothes over for school. We picked corn, shell beans, and squash today. We have had cukes and tomatoes for some time.

Shelling beans

Tuesday, August 14, 1973 cloudy and light rain when we got up

Lloyd called a while this morning. Betty called, she and I went to town. Then we went down cellar and cleaned the chest out. I went down to Betty’s while Kimmy tried on her dresses.
