The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 19 - 21, 1973

Sunday, August 19, 1973

Didn’t get up too early. Got breakfast, done up the work. Walt worked on the barn. Betty, Zak and Walt went for a ride. Dorothea and Dave called for a little while. Bill and Billie relaxed some today.

Monday, August 20, 1973 Bill worked, Carmen went to Mass, Kim went to Westbrook

A nice day. Bill worked at Roberts painting his house. I did a big wash. This morning Carmen left to go to visit Cathy Smith in Stoneham Massachusetts for a few days. The first time she ever went so far away alone. Kim went down to stay all night with Dorothea. I went down to Betty’s after I got my washing done. Esther here too and we picked her shell beans and got them shelled. Then went to Windham to shop. Came home, got supper and went down to Betty’s and she, Esther and I put the shell beans in deep-freeze.

Tuesday, August 21, 1973 Bill working

This has been a beautiful day. Peaceful, no Horton kids. Zak went down to Dorothea’s today to go with Dorothea and Kimberly out to see FLIPPER. They enjoyed it very much. About suppertime Dorothea and kids came. She had supper down there and stayed all night. They all enjoyed it very much. Betty was so relaxed and happy to be alone today. Fern, Lloyd called in evening.
