The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 13 - 16, 1968


Tuesday, August 13, 1968

Partly cloudy. I did a big ironing. Bobby Stanford came up. I made a squash pie. Betty called on the phone. I got all the Mrs. Dearborn’s, Drew’s washing and ironing done, also my own. I got a lot to do this week, as we will have company over the weekend.



Wednesday, August 14, 1968

Another very nice day, very hot. I done up my housework. Mark called. This is been a nice week so far for the celebrating of the birthday of Bridgton. I done up my regular work.



Thursday, August 15, 1968

A nice hot day. I did a dite of washing and ironed. Done some odds and ends housework, windows, cleaning up etc. In evening Billie and I picked vegetables and peas. We called at Ferns with some cukes. Author and Sylvia Andrews called to see the house. In p.m. Thena, Lila, Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis called and Chet. I worked at Dorothy Prescott’s today.



Friday, August 16, 1968

A came off hot. I got up early, got my house all cleaned up. Made two squash pies, two apple pies, gave Dave and Dorothea one of each. I made some cupcakes. Also got my work done up here and got ready, went down to Mrs. Drew’s.  Cleaned up her house. Came home, took a bath, got supper. Went to town, done the shopping. Came home, Betty and family came about eight. Billie picked some vegetables. I picked some peas in a.m.
