The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, July 27, 1968

A nice day. I baked beans, made a custard pie. Went to town, got paint and some other things. Had a good supper. Fern up here. Betty and I to town.



Sunday, July 28, 1968

A very nice day. Milan and Betty and Norma came around 9:30 or 10 AM. Glad to see them. We all was busy. As it was to be a day celebrating Dorothea’s birthday and Walt and Betty’s wedding anniversary. We had a turkey dinner, green peas, string beans and cukes with birthday cake and ice cream. Milan, Betty, Norma, Betty, Walt, Carmen, Kim, David, Dorothea, Jeff here for dinner later. Joy, Bob, Buddy, Debbie, Laurie and Cathy called. Jack, Sylvia, Nancy, Judy, Fern and Lloyd all called. In evening they played the recording’s. Walt went home without Betty. She is going to stay for a week and go home with Milan’s folks.


Monday, July 29, 1968 Dorothea 31, Bett and Walt’s wedding anniversary

A nice day, on the real cool side. I washed. Kim and Carmen had a good time today. We all sat around and talked. Had a ham supper. Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis came over. Betty played the recording for them. Joy and kids here in p.m. She copied the tape.
