The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 30 - August 1, 1968


Tuesday, July 30, 1968

It was cold in a.m. but it got hot. Milan, Betty and Norma down to Kip and Susan’s cottage on the lake. They had a nice day. Betty, kids and I went for a ride. It seems good. We had a lunch by the lake. Came home, got supper, had a turkey pie.



Wednesday, July 31, 1968 Cooler today

Delores called. Betty, Milan and Norma called on relatives. Betty Horton didn’t feel good today. Carmen was sick tonight. Kim is real cute. Betty, Norma, Joy all went down to Dorothea’s in evening. Milan and Betty stayed with Joy’s kids. I ironed, picked beans, had a Swiss steak supper. Cool.



Thursday, August 1, 1968

Partly cloudy. I dite of rain. I worked at Dorothy’s today. Came home, Kim was sick and Norma. Carmen better in p.m. I picked some beans and carrots for supper, made a blueberry pie. Betty Smith, Betty Horton and Carmen and Kim went to town. Stanford boys came up. After supper Billie and I picked vegetables. Joy and girls called in PM.
