The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 5 - 7, 1967


Thursday, September 5, 1968

A pretty nice day. I worked at Dorothy’s. Bill having a lot of pain with his eye. Billie didn’t sleep very well last night. I didn’t do too much after I got home except get supper. Joy called. I called at Aunt Ava’s in evening.



Friday, September 6, 1968

I got my work done up, went down to Dearborn’s to their house, cleaned up. Came home, cleaned up my house work of dusting etc. Got some vegetables for supper. Took a bath, washed. Betty and family came about four. It began to rain about 3:30. We had a heavy rain all evening. Bill home early, he has a bad cold. Bill was sick last night. Billie been sick at work today.


Saturday, September 7, 1968

It was cloudy and foggy after the very good rain we got last night. Betty and I did up the work. Went to town. It cleared off. Came home, got dinner. Billie up to Chet’s to work. Walt up early and went fishing with Buddy and Bob. Betty and I rode around with the car to places she hadn’t seen for some time. Kids are happy and having a good time. Dave called on his way home late last night.
