The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 4 - 6, 1968 Off to the Fryburg Fair

Colder.. Much colder today. I cleaned up the house. Took a bath and waited for Dorothea to come to go to the fair. She didn’t come so Billie and I went to town shopping. Billie home today for the fair. He cleaned up rest of the garden and cleaned up the garage. Dorothea and Jeff came in late p.m. to go to the fair. I went with them. Jeff had a good time, he was joined by Don Stanford. Came home. Betty and family were here. Dorothea took beef home tonight. She and Betty had a quarter together.

Cold and partly cloudy. We got up early, got ready and went to the Fryeburg Fair. Saw the parade etc. Carmen and Kim went on a few rides. It was so awful cold, we came home early. Was glad to get home where it was warm. Bill and Walt watched the ballgame. Kim slept. In PM. Betty, Carmen and I went up to Dick Sanborn’s and got some apples. Came home, got supper. Fern came up for supper. Billie worked up to Chet’s.

Sunday, October 6, 1968 Pumped well dry

Betty and Walt over to Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis’s. Billie is up to Chet’s to work. I got the work done up and Carmen and I got dinner. We kept Carmen and Kim, they both were good all day and cute. Today we pumped the well dry. Or down very low. Betty, Walt and kids left for home at about 5:30 PM. Fern and Lloyd called. Holly Smart called a few minutes. Betty and Walt took their beef home today.
