The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 26 - 29, 1968


Thursday, September 26, 1968

Mild. A cloudy rainy day. I done up regular work. Made cup custards and defrosted the kitchen refrigerator. Got some Swiss chard picked and ready for supper. After supper I went to Norway with Joy. Her dog is paralyzed in her hind legs. Dr. Gauger wasn’t in so she took her to North Conway, New Hampshire and Dr. Hadson. Billie up to Chet’s to get a cow in. It cleared off in late p.m.



Friday, September 27, 1968

A pretty good day. Not so warm. I worked at Dorothy’s. Came home and washed, cleaned up the kitchen and breezeway. Fed the pigs corn fodder, it is all gone now. Got snapshots from Betty today. Very good.



Saturday, September 28, 1968

A very nice day. Bill didn’t have to work. He and I got ready and went down to Dorothea’s. Bill papered Jeff’s room. Dorothea and I went down to the shopping center. We worked till late. Dorothea and Dave were pleased to get the room done, it looks so nice. Dave has a new window in it. Fern here for supper. Billie worked at Chet’s today sawing wood.




Sunday, September 29, 1968

Another nice day. Bill and I up early and went down to Dorothea’s again. Bill and Dave put the moulding up in Jeff’s room and theirs. It looks so nice. We was so glad to help them get it done. Came home, had supper. Bill called to see Gordon. Billie worked at Chet’s again today sawing wood. Billie has a bad cold.
