The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 6 - 9, 1968 A New President

Wednesday, November 6, 1968 President Nixon

A nice day. We didn’t get much done today except supper, except for regular housework. Walt came and got Betty and kids tonight. Carmen hasn’t been too bad today. They left for home about 8:30 PM. Today about 10 o’clock it was announced Richard Nixon has been elected president.

Thursday, November 7, 1968 OIL

It began to rain tonight about dark. Today we have had our first oil. I swept, dusted, washed floors and vacuumed. Also defrosted refrigerator. Betty called, Carmen is very sick with asthma. After supper she called, she is in the hospital, in oxygen tent and isolation. I miss Betty and the kids.

Friday, November 8, 1968 First snow, 4 inches, Bill to work at 3:30 AM

This is the first snow of the season. About 4 inches. Bill called to work at 3:30 AM. I worked at Dorothy’s in a.m. It has snowed, rain and wind blowed hard and cold all day.

Saturday, November 9, 1968

Billie worked for Lawrence hauling dressing. Bill and I down town. Fern up for supper.
