The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 19 - 21, 1968 Going to Concord


Thursday, September 19, 1968 Hair set, 80 to 90° 16.50

A very HOT HOT day. I worked at Dorothy’s. Came home. Shampooed my hair, cleaned up the house. Done noon chores. Mrs. Drew called and paid me. Minnie called. I went over, got my hair set tonight. Billie got his hair cut.



Friday, September 20, 1968

HOT. Another very hot day. I didn’t have to work at the cottage. I done up my work, washed, went to town with Fern and Lloyd. Did my shopping. Bill and I to town after supper. When we got home Dorothea, Barbara Autio and Jeff were here. Barbara and Dorothea went to the vets at Norway. Then when they got back Dorothy and I called at Joy and Bob’s. Joy showed us all her canning she had done this year. A lot of it. Dorothea and Jeff here until about 12 midnight.



Saturday, September 21, 1968 HOT AND HOTTER

A very hot day. I got my work done up. Took a bath and got ready to go to Betty’s and Walt’s. Billie and I picked some vegetables for them. Bill came home, took a shower. We left at quarter of 12, got up there about 2:30. All glad see each other. Bill and Walt worked on the trees. Betty, kids and I visit. Betty introduced us to her nice neighbors. Had supper. Went to the shopping center, got some things. Came home. Betty and I looked at her pictures.
