The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 6 - 8, 1969 Nanny Turns 59

Wednesday, August 6, 1969

It cleared up this morning. Betty, Milan out calling on Betty sisters. Didn’t come home until after supper. Betty, Carmen, Kim and I all went to Monmouth Mart in Scarborough. We did Carmen school clothes shopping. Before we got home we had an awful shower. Bill and I took a ride up through Sweden. We washed clothes, all laying on the ground. My leg is better.

Thursday, August 7, 1960 $10.00

Foggy when we got up. It cleared away. Betty Smith and I down to Dearborn’s cottage. Betty and Milan away calling in p.m. We had meatloaf for supper and string beans.

Friday, August 8, 1969 $5.00 59 YEARS TODAY

Hot. I worked at Dorothy’s. Leg about the same. I defrosted the refrigerator, made pies. Betty to town and done my shopping. Milan and Betty out calling. Milan’s hand better. I am 59 today. I have a lot very pretty things. An electric bedroom clock from Milan and Betty, a billfold from the Horton’s. Five dollars Horton’s, five dollars Billie, five dollars Milan and Betty, a very pretty wristwatch from Dave Thomas family, a set of pens and pencils from Kim, a plastic pitcher from Carmen. Very pretty cards. Joy, Buddy and family and Buddy’s mother. Milan, Betty, Betty, Walt and kids. Dorothea and Tracy and Bill and Billie and Fern were here. We had swordfish tonight, it was very good.
