The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 29 - August 1, 1969

Tuesday, July 29, 1969

Another miserable day. Rain showers etc. I washed out some clothes, such as towels etc. It cleared a little today but only for a short time. I picked a few beans today.

Wednesday, July 30, 1969

Partly cloudy today, at times rained by showers. Still lame. Done up the work, got caught up on my reading today. Kim fell and bumped her forehead today.

Thursday, July 31, 1969

Sun came up nice and red this morning. It is clear today after five days of cloudy and rainy weather. It’s awfully damp and sticky. Betty, Fern, kids and I to Portland and to Dorothea’s, and Westbrook. I got me a pair of shoes at Westbrook. Carrs, they are dandy. Kim back to Dr. Crane, her arm is coming good. He took the cast off. He checked my leg, took a x-ray. Nothing showed up. He gave me a shot of cortisone (or as Nanny spelled it, Quarterzone). We took Dorothea some peas, string beans, greens and lettuce. Fern and Carmen stayed at D’s while Betty, Kim and I went to doctor. Dorothea having a nerve-racking time with all the kids.

Friday, August 1, 1969 got new shoes

A very nice day. I took it easy. Betty down the work. We froze peas and beans. Washed, ironed, done up the housework. To town. I didn’t rest very good last night. It pained a lot. It was very bad this morning. I didn’t work at Dorothy’s.
