The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 14 - 17, 1969


Monday, July 14, 1969 Cloudy in a.m.

I got my hair set today. We had some beet greens for supper. Called on Barbara. After supper Betty Smith called, also Dorothea called and talked. Billie worked with Lawrence today picking up cattle etc. Betty took me to town in p.m. Bank and to drugstore. It cleared off today, it was quite warm. Arlene Mayberry called in evening. Betty and Walt called at Stanfords in evening.



Tuesday, July 15, 1969 Made root beer

A nice day, it came off hot. We washed a big wash, baby clothes and all. We made the root beer. I called at Delores’s in evening to say goodbye to Phyllis and girls.



Wednesday, July 16, 1969 HOT

Another very hot day. We did up the regular work. Phyllis and girls left for home at about 6 AM. We did up regular work. Went to town, got groceries. Kim on the tired side. Jeff and Nola up in evening. Washed today. Betty did all the ironing, a big one. Walt took the kids swimming before supper.



Thursday, July 17, 1969 HOT

Another very hot day. Not any breeze and a lot of humidity. Betty took Kim to Portland. Dr. said her arm is coming good. He took out the stitches. Fern went with her. Carmen and I stayed at home. I sent some greens and peas to Dorothea. Billie don’t feel too good tonight. Jeff and Nola Raye came up in evening. Washed today.
