The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 21 - 24, 1969

Monday, July 21, 1969 Milan 50 years old

It was foggy in a.m. Then it cleared. We washed in PM. Walt didn’t work. We watched TV some today. It was to see the man take off from the moon. What a relief. While there, Armstrong and Aldrin put up the US flag. I’m lame today.

Tuesday, July 22, 1969

A nice day. We washed. Clothes dried good. Did up the work. Had greens for supper. Took greens down to Ferns in evening.

Wednesday, July 23, 1969

A nice day. We did up the housework. Washed, ironed. Picked greens. Took some to Aunt Ava and Kennard’s folks. Had peas for supper and the first mess of string beans. In evening Bill and I went down to Jean’s, took her down some greens and peas. Esther called Fern today. Penny had a baby boy, 8 pounds 3 ounces.

Thursday, July 24, 1969 $10.00, The 3 astronauts came back

Cloudy in a.m. Cleared about 7:30 AM. I worked at Dearborn’s in a.m. In p.m. I went to Brownfield with Carmen and Billie fishing. We stopped at the store, got Italian sandwiches, cake, chocolate milk, cokes etc. Came home. Got greens ready for supper. Got Norman’s hay raked, bailed and hauled in, what he had mowed this p.m. After supper Betty, Walt, kids and Christie went for a ride. Bill, Billie and I out in backyard talking. Bill and I went to town. Nola and Jeff called in evening for a little while. Between 12 and 1 o’clock the astronauts came back to earth. What a relief to have them back.
