The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 6 - 9, 1969 Kim Broke Her Elbow

Sunday, July 6, 1969

A nice day. Got the work done up. Bill and kids out for a little ride. Betty, Walt and kids out looking around. Bill, Carmen and I went up around Fryeburg, Conway and home. Got some donuts at the bake shop in East Conway. Came home, had a cookout. Billie worked for Lawrence all day. Fern, Lloyd called after supper, also Dorothea.

Monday, July 7, 1969 KIM TO HOSPITAL

I washed, did up regular work. Got ready and we took the pictures up for Ken and Delores to see of Susan’s baby. While we were there Kimmy fell down the cellar stairs onto the cement floor and broke her elbow. We took her down here to the hospital. They couldn’t set it, so had to take her to MM Center in Portland. They had to operate to set it. It was hard to leave her.

Tuesday, July 8, 1969

I did up the work. Got ready and went to the hospital to see Kim. Called at Dorothea’s, she and her two boys went with us. Kim was asleep. It’s awful to see her there. In evening Fern, Lloyd called and Ken and Delores.

Wednesday, July 9, 1969 Kim Home

HOT. A very nice warm day. The doctors said Kim could come home. We went after her. She is quite good. Glad to be back home. Phyllis and two girls came today for a visit. Fern and Lloyd called in evening for a little while. I did up the regular work. We had a mess of peas from Niemi’s.
