The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A very nice day, sunny quite warm. Up early this morning and the moving began. Bill, Billie and Walt moved all the furniture and boxes, clothes etc. A hard day’s work. It seemed good to have the farm back in the family. Betty is very pleased and Carmen too. Fern was down there, finished washing windows and cleaned some furniture. I stayed here most of the day and cooked a chicken dinner. Kennard and Aunt Ava called at the farm today. It is very pleasant there. Betty worked hard today.

Today at 12:30 p.m. Betty gave birth to her third child, a boy. Her first boy. She called me at 4:13 AM. She had been having pain since about 3 AM. I did up a few things, went down to their house at about 4:45. She was having pain (labor) about every five minutes. At about three she called the doctor. He told her to come in. She left about 5:30. Walt stayed with her until it was all over. She had a very hard time. Cord was around its neck. I saw him in p.m. We are so glad it is all over. A very hot day. I washed all day. Carmen began school today also, second year of school.

Another nice hot day. We are all very pleased about the new grandson. I vacuumed the house all over with Betty’s vacuum. Walt down town in a.m and p.m. to see his son and wife. He took Kim. In evening Bill and I went down. Dorothea and Dave were there. Also Walt took Carmen and Kim. Betty was up, she looked good. Baby was real cunning, he has a nice round shaped head and face. Got word today Jean is married.
