The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 16 - 19, 1969 Scarred For Life


Saturday, August 16, 1969

Hot and humid. It has been so awful hot. I baked beans for supper. Fern was here. Walt went down to his mother’s for the weekend. Billie worked for Lawrence today. I hurt Kimmy today real bad. Sat car seat on her foot. Poor thing, I feel so awful about that.



Sunday, August 17, 1969

Another very hot and humid day. It was a little foggy in the early a.m. Billie with Lawrence haying etc. Fern, Lloyd called a little while in evening.



Monday, August 18, 1969

Hot and humid. A very hot day. Betty and I washed all day. She did her sleepings bag. We done up the housework. Walt came home today after being gone for the weekend. Betty, kids and I called at Stanfords. Had corn for supper. Bill home again today.



Tuesday, August 19, 1969

A nice day, not quite so hot. We had thundershowers and it cleared off clear as can be. The humidity all gone. Dorothea and Jeff called. Bill gave her a bushel of corn for freezing. We called at the Stanfords. Bill still home, eye is better. Billie is unhappy tonight. Norma Wildberger called and a friend. An Electrolux vacuum cleaner man called. I made a squash pie.
