The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 13 - 15, 1969 Hippie Style

Wednesday, August 13, 1969

A very nice day, on the hot side. Not too bad. Up early, got ready, went up to Lila’s, at Kittery, with Thena, Fern, Aunt Ava and Frances went also. We had a very good dinner as usual and a good time.

Wednesday, August 14, 1969 JEFF CAME HOME

Hot again. Today we got ready and went to Dorothea’s then to the airport to meet Jeff. A big  change over. When we left him on July 1 to go to his father’s he was good, quiet and innocent looking. He came home today long hair, black glasses, beads, bell bottom pants and bracelets. HIPPIE STYLE. I hope he changes back. He sure knew a lot of new words and hippie language. We all was glad to see him back. He had been with his father six weeks. Got home late. Dorothea and Jeff came up. Dorothea had a birthday cake and we had a little party for him.

Friday, August 15, 1969 Bill has a bad eye

Hot. I worked at Dorothy’s, came home. Got ready, went to town shopping. We had a good fish supper. Betty did a big wash. Cleaned their car and ours. Bill didn’t work today, bad eye. Went to the doctors.
