The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 11 - 14, 1969

Saturday, October 11, 1969

A dreary miserable day. Didn’t get up very early. Done up the work. Made ripe cuke pickles, rolls, pie, baked beans. Billie mowed the second (?) of clover at Walt’s and the garden of old weeds. Walt worked all day cleaning it up. Fern up for supper. Billie worked up to Ray McDonald’s mowing for Lawrence. Bill called at Betty’s and watched ballgame in p.m.

Carmen and Kim watching tv at home

Sunday, October 12, 1969 Billie sawed wood

Foggy and cloudy in a.m. Cleared about 11 AM. Did up the work. Billie sawed wood at Chet’s. Lloyd called. Bill fixed his electric razor. Walt still working in the garden.

Monday, October 13, 1969

A cloudy miserable day, on the cool side. I done up my work, went down to Betty’s. We cleaned paint off her windows and washed some. She did a huge ironing. Came home, got supper. After supper Fern, Billie and I went down to Cornish and got butter.

Tuesday, October 14, 1969

A nice mild day. I worked at Betty’s. We did her outside windows, the grain room and she cleaned up her whole house. It looks very clean after it was all done. She went to town for me. Fern had another one of those dizzy spells tonight. She was real bad.
