The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 15 - 18, 1982 First Snowfall

Monday, November 15, 1982 FIRST SNOW

 

It started as rain and rain and snow than snow. It got the top of the ground all white. I did my washing. Then I went down to Betty’s, she showed me some things. Bill to the hospital today for blood. He didn’t get home till 7:30. Billie to town and called at David and Dorothea’s. It cleared off about suppertime. Bill had supper at the hospital.

 

 



 

Tuesday, November 16, 1982 BILLIE, DOROTHEA, BETTY TO PORTLAND, 6 eggs

 

Nice day, not too warm, the snow melted in areas where was thIn. Up early this morning. Billie, Dorothea and Betty to Portland. Billie to his doctors. Said his results of the expansion balloon they did on his leg is performing very good. The hip is still better. That numbness in his toes and the bottom of the foot is because of the sugar in his system. He don’t have to go again until February. Dorothea and Betty went to the dentist. Had work done on their teeth. They have more appointments. Kim called tonight. She talked and laughed. I hope she will keep up this and not go back to being sober. Kim is doing much better in school. Got six eggs.

 

 

 

Wednesday, November 17, 1982

 

A quite nice day. I washed, went to town, signed up for fuel aid. Came home, finished the wash and watched soaps. On our way home, called at Dorothea’s, she is busy. Bill seemed a dite better, got six eggs.

 

 

 

Thursday, November 18, 1982 sent to Sears, six eggs

 

Another nice day. We have had very nice weather so far this month. Also October was a nice on the warm side. It seems so good. Today went to town with Betty and Delores. Also we sent orders to Sears. I came home, made a fish chowder for supper tomorrow night. Prepared tonight supper than watched TV. Kim, Betty and Dorothea up to Dawn’s for her birthday. Kim called on her way home.
