The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 1 - 4, 1983 Billie Came Home From Hospital

Saturday, January 1, 1983

 

A quite nice day for first day of 1983. I was busy all day. Zak went home about 2:30 PM. Bill okay. Dorothea called in a.m. with David, when he came to do chores. Betty and Walt came up in PM. Kim babysat tonight. Billie doing better. Betty, Walt, Dorothea and David called on him in PM. Carmen and Zak in evening. We watched the new year come and the old one go. I took down the Christmas candles and put away till next year.

 

 

 

Sunday, January 2, 1983

 

I did my regular work. Dorothea and David came to do chores. They visited awhile. I fixed Bill’s jacket and made out the bills. Wrote to Esther. I made brownies. Kids went to the movies and called to see Billie. He is pretty good.

 

 

 

Monday, January 3, 1983 $363 - $159

 

A very nice sunny day. I dite cooler but very nice and sunny. Dorothea and David came and did chores. I did the washing and quite a few odd and end jobs. Bill gone ice fishing with Carmen up to the Lake. Betty took Kim and Zak to Portland early to the orthodontist, got the kids home for some of their forenoon classes. Carmen couldn’t get her appointment so she has to go back tomorrow. Bill to the eye doctor. A most beautiful day, sunny and bright, not too cold. Carmen caught a very nice pickerel today 20 inches long.

 

 

 

Tuesday, January 4, 1983 BILLIE CAME HOME, VERY NICE SUNNY DAY

 

Billie came home today. He was very glad to get home. He got quite tired today. I hope he will get along now okay and NEVER HAS ANOTHER ONE. Bill to the Dr., he has got to go every day for a B12 iron shot. He is much better and doing very well. He went to town and done some shopping for me. That is a switch. Billie used to go and get the groceries etc. Dorothea came and David this morning and tonight. Zak came up and did chores.
