The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 31 - February 3, 1983

Monday, January 31, 1983

I did the washing. I cooked a beef soup for supper. It was very good. Dorothea called and got milk. Fern got a permanent today. It was a mixture of snow and rain, but the traveling want too bad because it was mild and it melted off the road.

A very nice day. I did the ironing. I wrote letters to Es and Carmen. I sent Carmen and Cliff’s birthday cards. Bill and Ilan fishing all day. Billie to the doctors, he took the treadmill test. It was hard. They said as far as he went it was okay but he hasn’t improved too much yet. His medication cost a little better than $65. I don’t know how he will keep that up. I wish he could get a job he could do. Zak up after school

Wednesday, February 2, 1983 Groundhog Day

A fair day. It was a dite on the cloudy side. By late PM it got real cloudy. It began to rain at about 11 tonight. Today I defrosted refrigerator. I cleaned the electric stove. I made brownies. I did a dite of wash, cleaned Heidi’s bed. Bill and Ilan fishing for a little while. Billie took a walk and called at Fern’s.

Thursday, February 3, 1983 HEAVY RAIN, $159, $363 equals $522

It rained heavy and the wind blowed quite a bit. I didn’t go to town. Betty went and done all the shopping. Bill down, cash checks and put money in bank, mailed the bills. Walt to Rhode Island yesterday. Got home at about 10:30 last night. This truck strike is now getting to the Maine truck drivers. I hope it will be over soon. Worried about David. He has had a hard week.
