The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 23 - 25, 1982 Christmas Eve Heart Attack

Thursday, December 23, 1982 Hair Set

 

Sunny most of the day. I got my work done up. Carmen came at about 9:15. I went down to Barbara’s and got my hair set. Billie came after me then I went shopping for a few things. Came home and done some odds and end jobs. Got a pot roast going for supper. I watched TV soaps. Dorothea and Carmen down to the hospital to see Bill. He was having IV blood transfusions and they took marrow from his chest and he want very good. Kim to work

 

 

 

Friday, December 24, 1982 BILLIE HAD HEART ATTACK, BILL HOME

 

A nice sunny day. I been very busy, washed windows, floors, swept, dusted, got things ready for tonight. Well all kinds of weather. Snowed last night, it rained, a dite of good weather. We got Fern up here. Bill home and had a early supper. Then we got ready for the snack feed. They all came except David. He was tired and fell asleep and didn’t wake up. He had had a bad night driving. We was opening our gifts etc. and then Billie had a spell, he thought was indigestion. Went in and laid down than got to feeling little better than had another and it was real bad. He had terrible pain. They got him to go to the hospital. Carmen took him. It was a heart attack Dr. Petrone said. We are so worried. Do hope all will be okay.







 

 

 

Saturday, December 25, 1982 Christmas day

 

Up quite early. Got the breakfast and David and Carmen came to do the chores. Then about 9:30 after they were done we went down to Betty’s for the Christmas day. They got a nice lot of gifts, same as always. We had a very good dinner. We all enjoyed as usual watching them open their gifts. Later on Paul came, he was so nice. But we all had Billie on our mind and felt bad he couldn’t be there. He always enjoyed it so much. Dorothea and I went to the hospital to see him in PM. Jeff, David and Sandra came later. We all got nice gifts etc. Nice except for Billie going to the hospital.
