The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 30 - 31, 1982 End of 1982!

Thursday, December 30, 1982

A fair day. No snow as jet. I done up regular work, went to town. Then came home and made three turkey pies. I’m glad they enjoyed them. They said they were good. Tonight went down to the hospital. Billie has moved into the hospital room out of the intensive care unit. He likes that better. Went down to the hospital to see him. He is very weak. David did chores. Zak helped. Tonight Bill got some birthday presents. A new battery for his car and a bag of birdseed. Battery from Walt, Betty, Dorothea and David, seed from the three kids. They spent the evening.

Last day of December and no snow. Zak up all night.

End of 1982

We had a winter of a lot of snow. Bill in and out of the hospital a lot this past year. Here and Portland MMC. He has had all kinds of tests and x-rays and examinations etc. He has been very sick at many of the times when he was losing blood. Also Billie to doctors for hip, blood vessel etc. He had a operation on his veins and tumor examined. He was in MMC and Mercy Hospital in Portland too. Now, at last of this year, he has had a heart attack and in NCM hospital in Bridgton.

We had a quite good summer. Betty and Bill made the small building up to their lot into a nice cottage. Bill was real good when he did that or helped, near able to do anything much after that. Kids enjoy the cottage up to the Lake. As well as rest of us. Had quite a few cookouts, one when Esther was here this summer. Also in early fall Milan and Betty came, we had a breakfast up there cooked outside.

David gave Billie a white milking shorthorn this fall. Ellie May had a nice half Angus and half Jersey calf in November. Zak had a big change of voice this year, no more kid to him. Also this past year Kim had a problem with her legs swelling very bad. They took her to the heart clinic and a doctor to check her veins. She has to keep her legs elevated and wear elastic pantyhose. And they have helped her. I hope she never has anything like that again.

David and Dorothea got a lot done to their home this past year. It looks very nice. Also she did an antique business, it did quite well. Betty built her heritage room, that is very nice.

Billie sold his red tractor to Walt this fall.

Carmen in her last year college. She is doing very well and had a very nice picture taken. This summer she worked all summer as flag girl on the state highway over to Norway. She earned good money. Also Kim done very well babysitting this year. Zak learned to drive the tractor this summer.

Joy and Betty had a feud this spring, it lasted long time. Joy did come to Betty’s at Christmas time and it cracked the ice some. Fern had a good year, no sickness or falls. Delores is getting more and more senile.

Bill bought a Subaru from Walt. A very nice car.

Billie had a problem with Heidi, infection on her stomach area. She still has some. He took her to Dr. Weary twice a day for a couple weeks.

Betty and Walt rented the clinic to Dr. Weary, a veterinarian from Alaska.

We had a good Christmas, also Zak got a brand-new Honda for his birthday.

This past year we had some good feeds at the Twin Oaks, the summer estate of the Walter Horton’s. Regular cookouts, lobster feast, Turkey dinner and an early morning breakfast. Carmen was up there for overnight a few times.
