The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 23 - 25, 1982 Two Thanksgivings for Nanny

Tuesday, November 23, 1982 Bill to Dr. Pollinier’s

Well another miserable cloudy foggy rainy day. I got my work done up and got ready and Dorothea and I left for Portland about 10:45 to take Bill to see Dr. Pollinier. Dorothea went to the dentist. Bill wasn’t bleeding today. The doctor wants to see him when he does. He may have to be operated on to stop this bleeding. It is likely he will be within a few weeks. Billie home all day doing odd jobs. A dreary rainy day. Kim back to school this morning. Carmen and Lisa called this evening, two nice girls.

Wednesday, November 24, 1982

Another miserable day but it cleared and got cooler. I have been very busy all day preparing for Thanksgiving dinner for tonight. We won’t be here tomorrow, going to Dorothea’s. I cooked a chicken, turnip, onions, shell beans, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, cranberry sauce, Graham nut bread and rolls, lemon sponge pie. I went to town with Carmen and Betty and Delores. My package came from Sears. Carmen up here for supper. Bill pretty good.

Thursday, November 25, 1982 up to Dorothea and David’s

A sunny day, something we haven’t seen for several days. We all, Betty and family, Fern and us also Jeff and David were there. It was a very very good dinner. Turkey, gravy, turnip, onions, squash, shell beans, celery, pickles, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, a very good salad, dark bread, rolls, coffee, chocolate milk, a most delicious dinner. Table set up very pretty and attractive with candles etc. It was a very nice day, on the cool side. All had a good time, talked etc. Watched ballgame’s etc. Their house is very pretty and look so nice and attractive. Jeff is facing problems and Dorothea too.
