The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Friday, February 4, 1983

 

A partly cloudy day. I washed windows. I did a wash. I made a pudding for supper and had baked mackerel. Joy came and got milk. Kim came up and called. Bill and Billie didn’t do too much. Billie out to the barn.

 

 

 

Saturday, February 5, 1983

 

I didn’t get up till six. I done up the work. Made a pie, rolls. Washed floors, swept, dusted. Kim had company. Zak had company. In evening Zak and Vince to movies. Kim called. A very nice sunny day but very cold.

 

 

 

Sunday, February 6, 1983

 

Cold. It was about 15 above this morning. I didn’t get up till 7:30. I got the breakfast, did up the work. Bill and I up to Dorothea’s then called at Betty and Walt’s. Came home, got lunch, I read. A man came to look at Billie’s truck today.

 

 

 

Monday, February 7, 1983 FIRST BAD SNOW, PERM

 

Snow started last night and is still snowing this morning. The wind is blowing some too. The schools here was called off at noon, in some places no school all day. I done up my work, I did a wash and washed my hair, got ready and went down to Barbara’s and got a permanent. Zak up after school and shoveled.
