The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 11 - 14, 1983

Tuesday, January 11, 1983 RAIN AND FOG, SNOW ALL GONE AGAIN, CARMEN GONE BACK

 

It is a very cloudy foggy day. It rained very hard last night and very mild temp. So this morning the snow is all gone again. It don’t look at all like January. Well Carmen came up for breakfast for the last time for two months or little more. She sure will be missed. She did the chores and I cooked her fish. She liked them so much. Dorothea and David came and done chores this morning too. Bill is improving

 

 

 

Wednesday, January 12, 1983

 

A nice day, very mild temp. I done up regular work. Billie milked this morning. David came down but Billie had him move some cement blocks from his truck to his new truck. Betty cleaned the outside of new truck, the body was a mess and she and Zak cleaned the Subaru. Bill helped some. Fern up today, we had corned beef and cabbage, it was very good. Miss Carmen. Kim called after school. She is a good girl. She got her drivers permit today.

 

 

 

Thursday, January 13, 1983

 

It was a mostly cloudy day, not too cold. I done up the work, went to town with Betty. Came home, done some odds and end jobs then I watched all TV soaps. Zak up and done chores tonight. Bill didn’t go out much today. Billie down to Betty’s for a walk. He got kind of tired today.

 

 

 

Friday, January 14, 1983 Nice Clear Day

 

It has been a nice sunny day. I washed windows in bedroom, living room and kitchen. Did my hair. I did a big wash. Betty up and did chores. David and Dorothea came about 11:30. David did the pen, he cleaned the hens, got hay and sawdust. Bill fishing all day. Billie took his daily walk and Heidi. I watched TV soaps except Pres. Reagan came on for news conference. Kim, Zak and Walt all went to visit his aunt and his sister. Kim is going to call in at a college in Boston to get some ideas etc. on modeling.
