The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 26 - 29, 1982

 

Sunday, December 26, 1982 windy

 

A nice day, but very windy. I been very busy all day. I did the washing. I did out a lot of cleaning up etc. In PM a big branch blew off Walt’s pine tree. It scraped the barn, bent the horse ornament Betty had on the barn. They all turned to and got it sawed up, picked up and hauled away. It was a very bad wind all day. I took the tree out in PM. Dorothea, Dave and Carmen came and did chores. Betty and Carmen went down to see Billie. Seemed like Monday all day.




 

 

 

Monday, December 27, 1982

 

A very nice day, sunny and not too cold. I did the ironing. I cleaned up the breezeway, washed windows. Betty here and Kim was up here. They stayed till quite late and well Kim stayed till supper tonight. It looks better getting cleaned up from Christmas. Kim worked on the puzzle. I helped her some. After supper Dorothea and I went down to the hospital to see Billie. He is very weak and tired, but he had sat up twice today. And walked a dite. It is so funny or odd not having him around. Well Kim stayed up tonight. We did a whole puzzle.

 

 

 

Tuesday, December 28, 1982

 

Not a too good a day, cloudy with rain, no snow. Bill and Betty put a new birdfeeder up. Bill likes it very much. He is anxious for the birds to come. I didn’t do too much today. Watched programs in PM. Down to see Billie, he is coming along pretty good.

 

 

 

Wednesday, December 29, 1982

 

I done regular work. I picked up some things for Christmas and put away for another year. Zak up tonight. I made a lemon pie. Down to see Billie with Betty, Walt and Zak. He is a dite stronger. Bill is doing okay.
