The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 20 - 23, 1983

 

Sunday, February 20, 1983

 

A nice sunny mild day. Very clear. I wrote to Carmen. I did some desk work. I read some more reading, got the magazines most all done. Zak up, Kim called in evening for a little while. Billie down to Fern’s. Kimmy cooked a supper for Betty’s birthday.

 

 

 

Monday, February 21, 1983

 

Kind of a cloudy day. Later cleared off. I did my wash. Dorothea and David came. I did the regular housework. If I can have the kitchen I will make some cookies. Also I ironed and made the cookies.

 

 

 

Tuesday, February 22, 1983

 

A very nice clear sunny day. I done up regular work. Got my chicken in the oven. Zak came up to spend the night. Walt up for supper too. Betty, Dorothea, Kim and Fern went to Portland. Kim bought some material for her doll display case. They had a very good supper at the York Steak House. Also they brought me home a box of Fannie Farmer Candies. Bill out off and on during the day.

 

 

 

Wednesday, February 23, 1983 HAIR

 

I done up the work, got my hair washed and rinse on it. It is cloudy and snowing lightly when we got up. Zak didn’t get up early. He relaxed, did some drawing. He stayed for supper went home at about 8:30. Joy came for milk. Dorothea called today. Billie kind of quiet all day. Did some reading.
