The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 28 - 31, 1987

Wednesday, January 28, 1987

A partly cloudy and sunny day. I been busy. I did some more ironing. I made brownies. Carmen sick, not able to go to work. A bad asthmatic cold. Betty coming good except gets exhausted when she tries to do anything. Billie up and got milk. Called at Dorothea’s. Milan called a minute. Zack dropped in a minute. Bill to town and got some groceries. I called Kim tonight. She is okay, thinking about taking a course in travel agency work.

A nice day. I went down to Betty’s a little while. I prepared the supper. Dorothea and Betty over to Norway. Dorothea did my shopping over there. She visited a little while. Zack has been shoveling all day.

Friday, January 30, 1987

It was clear when we got up but in mid a.m. it began to get cloudy and snow started in early PM. I done up my work. I washed, made a tapioca pudding and a fish chowder. I went down to Betty’s. I went down with Carmen. She left the baby and went shopping over to Norway. I came home, watched my PM soaps. Betty to the Dr. and he said she was doing very well recovering. All she has to do is take it easy whatever she does. Zack still did some shoveling.

Saturday, January 31, 1987 plowed snow

Another miserable day. I been busy all day, made a cake, washed floors and some windows. The snow and drifts are so high and deep Kassie can’t go down and play with Trinna. Phonie came and plowed. Zack shoveled the roof and steps etc. Bill did some shoveling on the breezeway. Betty had pains and went down to the hospital, came back home. Zack slid off the road today on Dodges Hill. It cleared off late at night.
