The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 19 - 21, 1986

Wednesday, November 19, 1986

It was cloudy and snow on the ground when we got up. Then it began to clear off about noon, the sun came out. On the cool side and some wind. I done up the work, prepared my supper. Did some things at the desk. I did the ironing. Made out store list. Carmen over, she went shopping. Randy Morrison and family arrived, they moved into the shelter.

Well a partly cloudy day. I couldn’t wash my windows. I got the Christmas cards out to get ready to send. Also went down to see Betty’s Cedar closet she had built up in the shed chamber. Billie’s foot was sore today. Zack days to get home are getting closer.

Friday, November 21, 1986 plowed yard for first time

A miserable day. It was cloudy, snow, rain all day. The snow began tonight, got 4 to 6 inches. Bill shoveled and Billie did some. I defrosted and cleaned the refrigerator on the porch. I straightened up cupboards. Billie’s toes are better, but the heel isn’t very good. Betty called today for a minute. This has been a bad snow storm, rain, flooding in some places, electrical mess, trees down. Three more days before Zack comes home. Betty brought up some pictures of him that came. He looks so nice in his uniform.
