The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 26 - 29, 1986

Sunday, October 26, 1986 STANDARD TIME AGAIN today nice and clear

It was nice when we got up. Sunny. Well this morning it was good old standard time again. Eddie and Kim packing up, getting ready to move some things to their new home in Lynn Massachusetts. She says she likes her work up there. Billie working outside all day. Doing everything. Well Carmen and Dennis came to Betty’s and brought Brogan. They have gone out. Betty and Kim brought her up here in the carriage. She is so perfect. We love her to death. Kim and Eddie left for home both trucks loaded. Left about 1:30 PM. We’ll be glad when they get home. I wrote to Zack.

This is been another one of those cloudy rainy miserable days. Same as they all was last summer. I been busy all day. Did the washing. Prepared the things for supper. Made a apple pie and applesauce. Billie to the Dr. over to Fryeburg. He cut his toenails, said it didn’t look too bad yet it is paining him a lot. They don’t like the looks of the red spot on the heel.

A mostly cloudy day. Betty called. Carmen came and cleaned up the house. She does such a good job, always looks so nice. The baby was good. I did my ironing and made a apple pie and applesauce. Cooked a boiled dinner. Milan went down to the store and got the meat for me. It was very good. Milan and Betty called this PM.

This morning we went down to Betty’s for the open house. The bedrooms are beautiful. It looks like a mansion. Beautiful carpeting on all the floors, hallway and stairs. Milan, Betty, Dorothea, Bill, Billie and me. In PM Carmen and Betty went grocery shopping for me and themselves. I took care Brogan for Carmen. She was good as gold, didn’t cry once. I called Kim tonight and talk with her. She is doing alright so far. Seems happy. Eddie is out to sea for 10 to 12 days.
