The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A very nice day for the last day of 1986. I been busy, made a pot roast. Had Zack up for supper and he stayed all night. We worked on the puzzle. It was a quite nice day. Betty had a New Year’s party. Carmen and Dennis were there, Carmen was happy. Having a friend. Also she had others. Betty called Kim at midnight. Carmen and Dennis out for supper. A Christmas gift from Dennis’s sister. Carmen enjoyed that. Billie’s feet are the same. I did a wash.

First of this year Carmen had dates from the dating service. First of this year she lost her palomino horse, Flicka. She was sick, had the vet. They couldn’t seem to help her, they took her to a hospital in New Hampshire for (animals large). She died on the operating table. Poor Carmen, we all felt so bad for her. Also seeing Flicka so sick. It was awful. Also she met a young guy named Dennis Willette. He is still with her.

Kim got through work at the Bridgton healthcare center and got a new job at the Hazen House in North Bridgton. She and Eddie moved from Carmen’s and live by themselves below Carmen. They planned to be married but Eddie’s father put a stop to that by having Eddie go to Castine Military Academy. Eddie worked all winter at Aubuchon in Norway, a hardware store. They did very well, they paid their bills of the winter etc. They was happy.

Billie has been having trouble and has had this whole year with his toe and foot. Had two taken off.

Bill was in and out of the hospital as time went on he got better and had a good ending in health. Zack also was in the hospital.

Dorothea lost weight this past year and looked like a million. She got better of her skin problem too. She was in real bad condition for a while. Billie was in and out of the hospital first part of the year.

Eddie also had his leg operated on this year. He was in camp at California for a couple of months.

Early this year they started Betty and Walt’s new bathroom, hallway etc. Later in the early fall they did their bedrooms all over. Newly papered, painted and all floors, hall and all, newly carpeted. They look like 1 million or some great palace.

Butch Gorman didn’t do any haying this year. Gordon Weeks did Walt’s. It was a very windy day, the hay blowed all over. We had a good crop of strawberries. It was such a poor season for growing vegetables.

We had a miserable summer. It rained about five or six days out of the week. Rest of the week was cloudy, damp and cold. Only had about 18 - 20 sunny days from June to October. Vegetables didn’t grow, things got so damp and sticky. We got some vegetables. Few. Couldn’t sit on the porch much. The fall came in and it began to get better. Early this spring Kim began to make plans to go to Indonesia. A family friend invited her, John McEnerney. She was gone two months to the day. It was awful seeing her leaving by plane to go way way out into the world all soul alone. All these big airports and foreign airports, Hong Kong and one in Japan. We was glad when she arrived home all safe and sound. Eddie met her in Boston, she visited with him a few days before she came home. Later on in the summer season Zack began making plans to go away to a military school. Massanutten military in Woodstock Virginia. We miss him so much. He got home for Thanksgiving and Christmas. He is one of the best young men in the world. Also this year David was in the hospital with problems. He had very bad headaches day and night. Finally the Dr. gave him a double batch of shots. He had had all kinds of tests etc.

We had many cookouts at Twin Oaks this summer, birthdays and birthdays and all kinds of goings and coming parties.

Carlton and Phyllis came this spring in their travel bus and was here all summer. Esther was here this summer. Billie Deming was married this past summer. Susan has a new boyfriend. Vince got a car. They both worked this summer. Delores still in the Bridgton Healthcare Center. No better. Fern had a pretty good year until late fall she had bowel troubles. Billie raised a few head of cattle this past summer. Walt had a busy and quite prosperous summer. Milan got him a new truck early in the summer. Walt got a new truck. Dorothea and David got a new car, also Susan and Joy.

Well Carmen worked at the hospital this past year carrying her baby in first of October. She was given three-month maternity leave. On October 17 she gave birth to 8 pounds 6 ounces baby girl Brogan Alyssa Horton Willette. They are the most pleased father and mother I ever saw. Dennis is the best father. She is a beautiful child. Blonde hair blue eyes. Perfect body. Carmen had two baby showers, one at Joy’s, one at NCM Hospital. She didn’t have to buy one stitch of clothes for her. Or baby furniture. Betty H and Betty S papered the baby room. Betty and Walt bought the crib, playpen and everything it needed. Dennis’s folks also the car seats and clothing. A bountiful Christmas. Clothes and money. Carmen is one in 1 million of a good mother also. She is so neat and clean and gets all kinds of love from her and her father. Both families are very fortunate having a perfect child like her.
