The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 3 - 6, 1986 First Snowfall of the Year

Monday, November 3, 1986 Billie got new glasses $174 Bill $399

A nice clear day, a few clouds came in. They went away. Ilan cut trees along wall. Bill out some today riding around. I did the washing, made a pie. Betty over to Carmen. They did the electrical work over there. Got ready now to hook up the washer and dryer if they can possibly locate a plumber. Watched TV soaps. Milan called.

A beautiful day. On the coolish side. I done up my work. Got ready to do the bills etc. Betty came. I went down to see her house, it looks so very nice. Carmen came. She and Betty helped changed beds. Carmen swept and dusted. Milan, Betty up. Betty got a permanent. Election day. A new governor, John McKernon and Joe Brennan will go to Washington. The Democrat won the vote of the white house. I didn’t go to vote. Bill did.

Well this morning when we got up SNOW. All over about 6 to 8 inches. A mess. I hate it. Cassie didn’t know what to think. I been busy all day, done regular work. Made a apple pie, applesauce, the jellies. Milan called, no one else here. Dorothea called in late PM.
