The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 1 - 4, 1987

Thursday, January 1, 1987 New Year’s Day

A nice day. Kind of on the cold windy side. Zack here today. We worked on the puzzle. Bill read his new books and magazines. Billie read a lot too. Billie and Zack down town. Zack went home in midafternoon to get ready to go out tonight. He is so pleased he has his license. I called Kim this evening. Carmen and Brogan called. She looks so nice in her little new outfit. She is a beautiful child.

Clouded up and we had a big storm move in. It was heavy winds, a lot of snow and high drifts. It done a lot of damage. Well, I worked at the desk getting the bills ready to go. But the storm got so bad we couldn’t get to the bank with the checks. Carmen and Dennis had to take Brogan to the Dr. for shots and her checkup. She is growing in length, weight and is quite matured for a three-month-old child. She is smarter than chain lightning. Cassie has been bogged down today because of this awful snowstorm.

Saturday, January 3, 1987 Carmen back to work, plowed snow

A mess after the big storm. It was partly cloudy this morning. It cleared away. Zack came up and did the shoveling, had breakfast. Did a lot of shoveling. Phonie came and plowed. Our mailbox got broken and lost in the snowbank. Bill found and he and Billie got it fixed for a while. I made a pie, washed floors, vacuumed etc. etc. Carmen back to work after a three month maternity leave. This storm was bad in Massachusetts where Kim and Eddie live. Milan came up this morning. I cleaned the oven and did ironing.
