The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 18 - 21, 1986 Fern In Hospital

Thursday, December 18, 1986

Well it is been rainy, cloudy, snow. I made a cake, custard pie, cooked a piece of boiling beef and boiled cabbage. Watched TV soaps. Bill better today. Susan hasn’t got her water pump fixed yet. Tomorrow Zack is supposed to come. Carmen and Betty called tonight.

Friday, December 19, 1986 Zack home tonight for the Christmas vacation.

I did some more cakes today. And made some more fudge. They came out very good. I did a wash and watched most of the soaps. Well Zack home again about 12:30 for the holidays. He came by plane. All alone. He had to change planes in Philadelphia for Portland. He did very well all alone for the first time. No delays or wait overs this time, right on schedule. I tell you when he came in that door all dressed in a new uniform with a staff Sgt. bar and other insignias on his uniform coat he looked so nice. Very very pleased to see him. Good for the eyes.

A quite nice day. I been busy all day. I made a squash pie, cake, baked some beans. Carmen and Brogan called in PM. Billie went with Dorothea down to York to get some shoes he can wear. They got home about 4:30. After supper Zack came, he and I went down and got Betty Smith. We saw their tree. Then we came up and got Betty H. We went all over her new house. It looks so nice. Saw their tree than over to Joy’s, saw her tree etc. Also that was very good. Then up to Dorothea, her tree too looks very good. Fern isn’t very good. Then we went to the Horton and Willette home over to Harrison. That was beautiful over there and the baby is so cunning and smart. It was so nice going and seeing all those things.

Sunday, December 21, 1986 Fern to NCM Hospital

A beautiful day, sunny and clear. Not very cold. Got up and got the breakfast and got the work done up. I made another cake for Christmas. I called Susan, Dot and Dorothea. Lorraine called on the phone. Milan called and made a visit. I called Dorothea. She said the Dr. is having Fern come into the hospital for doctoring. She hasn’t been very good for about two weeks. Her mind is mixed up. It may be because of the medication she has been on for  her stomach problems. Carmen hauled hay, she, Dennis and Zack brought it up for Billie.
