The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 25 - 28, 1986 Christmas

 

Thursday, December 25, 1986 a very bad day weatherwise, heavy rain

 

A big day at Hortons. The family, Walt and Betty, Carmen, Kim and Zack and the newest member Brogan Alyssa. Her first Christmas. Also Dennis, Eddie, Bill, Billie, Milan, Betty, Dorothea, David and me. Carmen, Dennis and Brogan over to Dennis’s folks for dinner. They open their gifts which we all enjoyed very much. Kim and Eddie got a new TV. Carmen and Dennis a new microwave oven. They got clothes, dishes, jewelry etc. etc. Betty and Walt got a lot of nice gifts also. Zack got a very nice zoom camera, and nice flashlight and clothes. Also many other very nice useful gifts. A very nice Turkey dinner with all the extras etc. A very nice dinner and a good time. We missed Fern a lot. Got the tree out tonight.

 

 





















 

Friday, December 26, 1986

 

A nice day after the awful rainy day of Christmas. I didn’t get up very early. I did the regular work. Put things away. Had a very nice Christmas. Gifts and all. Betty, Zack, Walt went over to Carmen’s. I went with them. A very nice display of gifts over there from Dennis’s folks. The baby got so many nice gifts of clothing and toys animals etc. Came home, got supper. Watched Dallas and Falcon Crest on TV.

 

 

 

Saturday, December 27, 1986

 

Since Christmas we have had good weather. I did up the work, fixed my dress. I wore it up to Dorothea’s. She had a Christmas party for Fern. Milan, Betty, Betty, Walt, Zack, Carmen and Brogan. Joy, Joan and me. She got some nice things and useful. Milan and Betty called here.

 



 

 

Sunday, December 28, 1986

 

A nice day. Carmen called for a little while. Put some tapes on the VCR. We watched them. Billie up to David’s. Zack called also Walt up for breakfast or donuts and coffee.
