The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A quite nice day. Walt up for coffee. Milan called also. I wrote to Zack. Called at Milan and Betty. Not much going on. I got all the reading caught up.

A nice sunny day. I did my washing. Carmen came, she did the cleaning, got the groceries. Milan dropped in a minute. Dorothea called in evening. I made two batches of fudge today. I made a pudding and Jell-O. On television today was those government hearings.

Got up, it was cloudy. I done up the work, got some Christmas cards off. The government hearing didn’t last too long. I worked at the desk figuring on things for Christmas etc.

Wednesday, December 10, 1986 Caribou

It was cloudy most all day, it cleared late in PM. Dorothea and Billie to Portland and all around looking for shoes for him. No luck. Nothing. They went to Freeport also. He was tired and a lot of pain in his foot. They didn’t get home till after five. I wrote letters and made a couple pies. Bill here all day. They hauled a load of Caribou in today from Canada. They looked up some things for Betty in my diary. Carmen babysat for Fern today. I called Kim and talk with her tonight. She is lonely when Eddie is gone. He should be home Sunday.
