The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 1 - 4, 1987

Sunday, February 1, 1987 Betty back to hospital

A very nice day after the storm. About 5 AM Betty was in terrible pain and went back to the hospital. Walt called, he is very worried about Betty. They can’t find what her problem is not at noon. I hope she will be better when he goes back. Billie and Zack hauled hay to Carmen’s. I did the bills today. Zack here for lunch, also had breakfast here.

Monday, February 2, 1986 ZACK BACK TO LR HIGH TODAY

Betty is not too good. She is a dite better, still in intensive care. I did a wash, made two blueberry pies, one for Walt and Zack. Well Zack started in at LR High again. I hope you will like it. He goes in his car. It is good he has his license. It is good having him home especially for Betty and her condition. Carmen called a little while today. Her car is in garage. She did some work at her mother’s. Milan called.

She still has some pain but not so bad. Zack here for supper and Walt. He had been to a meeting in Augusta. Dorothea dropped in a minute. They moved Betty into a regular room today from the intensive care unit. Carmen got her car back today.

Wednesday, February 4, 1987 BETTY HOME

I done up the regular work. Watched the programs. Carmen came about 10:30. She did the cleaning. She brought Brogan. She had changed a lot since we had seen her. Grown and more playful. She is just like a doll. Pink and white. About noon Walt got a call from Betty. She was ready to come home. She looked better, her color. Very weak. Hope now she gains and comes along okay. Carmen and I went down. I talked with Kim tonight. She is sick with a cold. She don’t always sound very happy.
