The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Friday, February 13, 1987

 

Cold and windy. I did a washing. Looked over some clippings. Zack is better now. He called today. He has been very sick with Mono, a sleeping sickness. We watched the soaps, no more till Monday.

 

 

 

Saturday, February 14, 1987

 

Wind still blowing. I done regular work, baked beans. Ebony is sick or not eating very well. They keep a blanket on her. She is very thin. We had a nice Valentines. Cards, very nice candy, and a beautiful bouquet. It was all very nice. The kids are very good, grandchildren and great-grandchild. Dorothea, Dave, Walt and Betty, Billie, Carmen, Dennis, Kim and Eddie, Brogan and Zack. Thanks to them all.

 

 



 

Sunday, February 15, 1987

 

A very cold and windy day. I done up the regular work, had callers. Milan, Betty, Walt, Zack, Dorothea and David. Also Carmen and Brogan. I done regular work. Had a good supper. Betty prepared Italian sandwiches. They were so good. Zack and Walt up for breakfast. Walt for the coffee. Susan called for a visit too. She came and got her food.
