The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Wednesday, April 29, 1987 TRUCK, SNOW EVERYWHERE

 

 

 

Zack got his new Ford truck tonight. Bought it from someone in Denmark. It is very pretty and a real classy one. He likes it very much. I hope he has good luck with it. Well there is a sickening mess outside now, snow slop and mess everywhere. Carmen came and Brogan. They finished the house cleaning and did the cellar. Now we have all the windows to wash, mostly outside. Billie got his truck fixed.

 

 

 

Thursday, April 30, 1987

 

A better day, a lot of sun and windy. I did the ironing. Dorothea down to Jeff’s, they went shopping. Carmen over to Betty’s, she took the new truck down and got it licensed. Milan and Betty called. Betty H called Billie down, odds and end jobs. Bill read books all day. Zack went on a field trip today to Boston with classmates. It was very interesting and he got a lot out of it. I’m glad he went. The snow melted in the fields today. Kay F. Maynard in hospital. Very sick, in critical condition.

 

 

 

Friday, May 1, 1987 ZACK TO SCHOOL IN HIS NEW TRUCK

 

First day of May and it dawned clear and sunny, on the windy side. This has been a nice day, on the coolish side. I done up the regular work. I worked at the desk, got the bills all made out and ready to send out. Today Zack went to school in his new truck for the first time. I’m so pleased he has it. I hope he won’t have any trouble with it. Bill has been reading all day, went to town and cashed the checks. Billie up after milk and cleaning up Cassie. Milan called a couple times. Betty S onces. They went to New Hampshire and got their (?). Carmen down to Betty’s, they was busy.
