The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 24 - 27, 1987

 

Tuesday, February 24, 1987

 

A nice sunny day. I been busy, made a custard, brownies, cooked a pea soup for supper. Very good. Betty, Carmen and I over to Harrison looking for a trailer for Carmen. Not just what she wants. Too drab inside. Zack stayed to make up work at school.

 

 

 

Wednesday, February 25, 1987

 

A beautiful day. On the windy side. I wrote letter to Esther and Thena. I cooked a roast beef for supper. Milan took Billie to Dr. Rud in Portland for his annual eye checkup. It is good. Carmen came, she went to town and got me some things. Bill and Walt out looking at cars today or wagon. We watched the TV programs.

 

 

 

Thursday, February 26, 1987

 

Another very nice sunny day. Mild. The snow settled today. Milan and Billie up to New Hampshire. Milan got a gun rod he wanted. I made a rhubarb pie. Very good. Dorothea called this PM.

 

 

 

Friday, February 27, 1987 A BRAND-NEW CAR

 

Walt drove a brand-new car home today. It is a Subaru wagon. Very pretty dark maroon, wire wheels. And all kinds of gadgets on it. I’m glad for them. I did a wash etc. Watched shows. Billie called on Mr. and Mrs. Zint over in Sweden today. We watched TV soaps. Milan called. I wrote letters to George and Peg.
