The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Friday, February 20, 1987

 

A nice sunny day, on the cold and windy side. I been busy. I did a wash. I washed windows, watched the soaps. Bill been reading all day. Billie up after milk and up to Dorothea’s. Betty and Carmen to Norway to grocery shop and did some shopping for Brogan. They got me a few groceries. Milan called.

 

 

 

Saturday, February 21, 1987

 

I been busy all day. I cleaned, washed floors, made a nice cake. Boiled frosting, baked beans. In PM Kim and Eddie came. They brought their new dog. Cassie didn’t care for her. Also she was jealous. It was a nice day, but on the cool side.

 

 

 

Sunday, February 22, 1987

 

A nice sunny day. The snow honeysuckled today from the warm sun. Walt came up for coffee. Milan called for a little while. I didn’t do much. I just did the regular work. Read some of the magazines. In PM Walt, Betty called. A little later in the PM Betty came and put some tapes on. We watched them. Also Zack brought up some of the best Italian sandwiches for supper. Zack was here, they had company. Carmen, Dennis, Brogan, Tom and Charlene. Then in evening Carmen, Dennis brought Brogan in. She is a treat to see. She was dressed so cunning in the blouse Kim got for her. Also for Carmen, mother and daughter outfit.

 


 

 

Monday, February 23, 1987

 

Cloudy. I did a wash. I made a pudding. Billie to the Dr. over to Fryeburg. Then he went up to get milk. Milan called. I watched the soaps this morning. Carmen and Dennis came to do some errands downtown. Billie had to go down to see Dr. Doyle this afternoon. His toe is bad and his foot has a big ulcer. They will try to heal it, the toe, but I’m afraid it won’t.
