The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, April 9, 1987

 

A better day, some sun. No rain. On the coolish side. I did a big ironing. I sent Cindy Wolff’s cards, wrote a note. I cleaned some more in the bathroom. Carmen finished etc. She did a good job and it looks nice. She and Brogan came about 10:30. Bill had some electrician come to check out the well. Betty over to Brownfield with Walt while he was painting road lines. Carmen took Brogan down to Betty’s to stay with her till Dennis got her at 7:30 or eight. Zack, Betty, Walt and Brogan down to look at a truck for Zack. Milan about the same, he has a skin cancer on his side. In the B news today was items about Chris and Vince. I am very sorry they did those things which they knew was not right. I’m sorry and feel bad.

 

 

 

Friday, April 10, 1987

 

At last a quite nice day, it was more or less cloudy in forenoon, but in PM it was quite nice and sunny. I didn’t do very much today. I cleaned the few draws and did a few odd and end jobs. Billie up to Dorothea’s and after milk. He did a lot of raking. It looks so nice after he raked. Zack called and got Bill, they went over to Denmark to look at a truck. Carmen and Brogan down to Betty’s, they cleaned, then they went to New Hampshire. Milan called me today. Kim and Eddie came about 8:30 PM with a few pieces of furniture. Kim stayed all night at Betty’s. Eddie went back.

 

 

 

Saturday, April 11, 1987

 

A perfect day, all sunny. HOT too. Billie raking, went and got the lawnmower. He expected Zack to help, but he had to rake down home. Kim didn’t get up very early. She came up and got breakfast, also Papas lunch.
