The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 12 - 15, 1987

 

Sunday, April 12, 1987 KIMBERLY’S 21ST BIRTHDAY

 

A quite nice day, sunny mostly ,on the coolish breeze side. Betty’s family, Betty Smith and us had a very early spring cookout in the backyard for Kim’s 21st birthday. She got a very pretty set of candle like table lamps, a telephone talker and $90 in money. Also she took back home with her a new (to her) car. The red Toyota car which Zack had. Kim took Betty Smith down to see Milan. He is about the same. She visited with us till they came for the cookout. Kim enjoyed being home this weekend. Carmen was sick with a touch of flu. She looks like she is sick. Brogan looks so cute all the time. Zack still looking for a truck to buy. Zack raking and Billie cleaning. I cleaned the desk draws.

 

 


 

Monday, April 13, 1987

 

Cloudy when we got up. It cleared during the day and was sunny. I did the wash. I cleaned the can out I had full of papers etc. I had parsnips for supper. They were very good. The grass is growing good and getting green. Billie has done all the raking and it looks very neat and good. Carmen don’t feel very good from the flu.

 

 

 

Tuesday, April 14, 1987

 

Another nice and sunny day, it was quite warm. I finished looking those papers etc. over. Carmen came and did the cleaning and cleaned the corner cupboards. Betty, Bill and Zack out looking for trucks and a traveling trailer. Betty is having Brogan tonight because Dennis was supposed to pick the baby up early but he called and said he would be an hour longer. I’m sorry. Billie cleaned up the piles he had raked up out along the road. Carmen still don’t feel good. Brogan was good and cunning today.

 

 


 

Wednesday, April 15, 1987

 

A nice day. I been busy. I cleaned the closets and some draws. Betty and Carmen over to Norway shopping. Billie done a lot of work outside today.
