The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Decenber24 - 25, 1984 CHRISTMAS

Monday, December 24, 1984

I washed, cleaned up the house, washed windows, made two pies. I got things to going for tonight. I went down to Barbara’s and got my hair set. Carmen, Kim helped Betty to get her vegetables ready and the table set etc. Then when I came home they came up and helped me to prepare for the Christmas Eve party and opening our gifts etc. We went down to Fern’s first and took some gifts down, was with her while she unwrapped them. Came home, we got many many nice gifts. One thing was a broiler toaster from Billie. I got dresses, nightgowns, slippers, diary and a very pretty poinsettia from Jeff. Silverware, puzzles, can opener electric. Apron, calendar and candy.

Tuesday, December 25, 1984 Christmas a nice sunny day

A nice sunny day. Warm in a.m. Up early and got breakfast and work done. Down to the Hortons. They had the dinner going. We all went to the living room, they open their gifts. They all had so many. Nice useful gifts. Carmen got a lot of clothes. Kim and Zak got some too. Betty and Walt also bathrobes etc. We had a delicious dinner. Dorothea came and David, they got a lot too. Fern came up, she enjoyed the day very much. Didn’t get tired. Joy and two girls were there at Betty’s for dinner. Jeff and his girlfriend Liza came, she is a nice girl. Jeff was very calm and good. They brought us all gifts.
