The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 17 - 20, 1984

Monday, September 17, 1984

A very nice day. I been busy all day, washed, ironed, picked and froze Swiss chard greens. Billie got the garden all cleaned up and harrowed. It looks very good. Bill went to South Portland with Dorothea for the ride. She had her treatment. Betty worked at Sun Rock. A nice clear sunny mild day.

A beautiful day. I got the work done up. Betty came and called. Carmen called. Then we got ready and went down and took Fern to the eye doctor. Carmen and I went down and got the surplus food at the Catholic Church. Came home and we drove over to the place Carmen would like to buy on Maple Ridge. Very pretty, the view is. Kim went too.

Wednesday, September 19, 1984 moved deep-freeze, Kim got a permit to drive

A nice sunny day. I done up the regular work. Took the milk bottles down cellar. Billie and David went to Norway. David bought a Guernsey heifer of Clyde Rowe’s. Betty came up. She helped me to get the oven cleaned. Also she defrosted and cleaned the deep-freeze. She was going to Norway to finish up on her camp. Also after school Betty, David, Carmen, Zak and Kim all moved the deep-freeze up into the breezeway. I like that.

Thursday, September 20, 1984 Fern driveway

A very nice day, sunny too, very mild. Or hot. I done up the work, defrosted the refrigerator in the kitchen. Late Betty called, she, Carmen and I went to Norway her Shop and Save in South Paris. Fern stayed long. Fern had her driveway done yesterday. I came home, saw the last two soaps. Billie got some hay. Bill went to Norway with us, he is in bad shape, getting so thin.
