The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 23- 26, 1984 Betty and Milan Leave

 

Tuesday, October 23, 1984

 

Some rain, some clouds and sunshine. I watched my morning show. Got ready, went down to Betty’s. We, Betty S, Betty H and I went up to the Heritage Room. I came home. Betty C down to Fern’s while Carmen was away. I talked with Kim this morning. She still is in a lot of pain. Her voice sounded so she was not very good. She went away with Carmen in PM.

 

 

 

Wednesday, October 24, 1984

 

Billie and I down to the vegetable farm (?) in Standish and got some beans, onions and potatoes. Kim to work tonight for a little while. Betty took her and went and got her and took her home.

 

 



 

Thursday, October 25, 1984 Milan and Betty left

 

I done up the work and did the washing. Also I washed the living room curtains and other things on the back porch. I worked at the desk. Bill to the Dr. again today. Milan and Betty left early this morning for home. They had a long visit this time. Today Carmen went for an appointment but the man was called away and she didn’t see him. Billie hauling dressing here and at Betty’s.

 

 

 

Friday, October 26, 1984

 

At last it is raining. We need a lot of rain to fill the wells. I done up the work. I did the ironing. I watched my show this morning. It has rained all day. I done some ironing. Watched some shows. I was down to Fern’s for a while, while Carmen went shopping. Billie busy getting ready for the new steer he is getting from David.
