The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, October 7, 1984

A quite nice day, not too cool. I worked on my checkbook. Got that checked up with returns from the bank. I did regular work, didn’t get up until 7 AM. I made applesauce. Carmen called, also Zak. Betty’s folks got there garden cleaned up and all harrowed. Billie and Zak did it. Billie got some of his odds and end jobs done, quite a few more to do. Kim worked today at the drugstore.

Monday, October 8, 1984 Permanent

It was a partly sunny day. I did the housework and the washing. I got things to going for their lunch and a few things started for supper. Because I was going to get my permanent. I didn’t get home until late 5:30 PM. I got supper. Dorothea called and she and I went down to Fern’s. She is in a bad mood. She is a sick person I know, but she is quite on the disagreeable side too. Billie been busy all day doing falls work. Dorothea and David came.

Tuesday, October 9, 1984

A partly cloudy day, sun in PM. Bill to the Dr. for a sugar test etc. It has been on the warm side. The appliance man, Shirley Irish, came and fixed the dryer. Cleaned exhaust hose. It was a mess. I did some odd jobs today. Carmen called, she was all shook up. She don’t like her job. It is trying and nerve-racking. Called at Fern’s tonight.

Wednesday, October 10, 1984 new refrigerator

Sort of a cloudy (day) then it cleared. I did some washing. It seemed good to have the dryer working good. I went down to Betty’s. Kim was there. Betty’s new refrigerator came. It is very nice. Also I went over her house, it looks so nice. I was down to Fern’s, she looks bad.
