The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 30 - October 2, 1984

Sunday, September 30, 1984

A nice mild day. I done up the work, wrote to Esther. I went down to the little white house while Carmen and Kim were moving some things. Billie and the kids took the fence down today. Kim stayed alone tonight after Carmen went back to Fern’s.

The first of this past month Warren’s Market closed its doors. We have done business with the store for about 50 years. It used to be called R.L. Warren’s. Very good store, always clean, very nice, fresh always vegetables, fruit and meat. Also all other supplies they carried. The town was shook up when they got through. Bridgton has degraded, its value in property, business and appearance, so much in the last 10 years. He used to be a nice clean prosperous town, businesses, good stores. Old friendly folks, used to know most everyone, not anymore. A different class.

Monday, October 1, 1984 got Pullets

It was a rainy miserable day. I did the washing. Also cleaned Billie’s bedroom. Raymond Harmon and his wife called here today. He used to be here in Bridgton. Aunt Jo’s grandson. Dorothea and Betty down at Fern’s tonight. Carmen went over to the fair to pick Zak up. He went today, not a very good day. It rained very hard after supper. He was real wet. Billie up to Bethel at the Roberts Poultry Farm and got six pullets. He helped Zak get their house cleaned and ready for these Rhode Island red pullets we have.
